A Free Verse Writer’s Lament by Morgan Sutherland
I never imagined I’d write a poem
With quatrains, couplets, or any sort of rhyme
My style suffocated and my true voice unspoken
I must fulfill the criteria, and I’m running out of time.
Free verse is my only style
Not rhyme, rhythm, or scheme.
Rhyme is acceptable once in awhile,
But I prefer to work around tone and theme.
This war with rhyme which I cannot shelve,
Will soon end at line fourteen.
But only to return in English 12.
Rhyme, sadly, is my high school destiny.
From this sonnet, I cannot clearly see
Rhyme will be the end of me.
